Satakunta Museum was founded by Pori Finnish Society in 1888. Ownership of the museum was transferred to the City of Pori in 1899 and it has operated as the central museum of the province of Satakunta since 1980. The range of exhibits, of which there are about 70 000, is wide and varied.
The task of
Satakunta
Museum is to record the area's material culture
and convey the spirit of cultural traditions of
different eras. The museum generally keeps records of
the information acquires by preserving, managing and
keeping samples of desired materials, operating in
cooperation with researchers in the field, schools and
other teaching institutes; by carrying on research,
publication and education activities as well as
operating as the central museum of the province, giving
local museums expert assistance. The operating area of
the museum is the province of Satakunta.
Pori
Art Museum has been famous for its modern art
exhibitions for almost two decades. Exhibitions by
Richard Long and Daniel Bure and the work of many Fluxus
artists have been shown here, ranging from Yoko Ono to
Geoffrey Hendricks. The origin of the museum's profile
is connected with the grand old lady of the Finnish art
world, Maire Gullichsen and the collection of
foundations established in her name. These art
foundation collections stored in Pori Art Museum depict
the 20th Century and especially the age of
Modernism of post-war Finland, and the international
influences on our art. Pori Art Museum, in honour of
Maire Gullichsen's cultural legacy, has from the
beginning focused on the new phenomena of the visual
arts. The museum is constantly changing,
along with the rest of the world. The person, the
individual, is always in the key position. At its best
the art museum is a meeting point, the place where
phenomena and thought of our time converge. The museum
is like a vessel, enabling interaction, the forward
transfer of thought, to a new creative and
culture-forming reality - to the future world. Pori Art Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 11.00 - 18.00 and on Wednesdays from 11.00 - 20.00. A small admission fee is charged. Free guided tours of the exhibitions take place on Wednesdays at 18.00. The museum's cosy café and shop are open during the same times.
